Cellular uptake systems

The bioavailability of drugs or molecular probes directed at intracellular targets depends significantly on their solubility properties. The molecules must be polar enough to dissolve in biological fluids but not so polar that the drug can’t enter cells. As a consequence, many drug candidates fail to advance clinically because they are out of this range of polarity. To resolve this problem, several techniques have been developed to enable cellular uptake including carrier systems like cationic liposomes, dendrimers or microspheres. The aim of this project is the synthesis of transporters, capable of being able to be taken up by cells, and their subsequent functionalization with biomolecules for development as a carrier system.
